Kip,
I received Vladimir's and your correspondence on the Serbs, and the ethicness
of another war. Being at Linz for a few weeks, I sent copies to Ulrike at Bonn.
I still remember when I was a child, a (forced) follower of Hitler, when the
bombs fell. Also, I remember the day when our village was to be shot, because
two Russian soldiers had disappeared. (Fortunately, they returned in time for
me to survive: they had drunken too much). In such situations, I did not enjoy
the idea that I owed my suffering to our "Fuehrer", to my country, or to any
person in the world: I wanted to survive.
I remember having read Evry
Schatzt-
man's memories in a recent Ann.Rev.A & A volume.
Your reply, Kip, would
have
shocked me in such a situation, justified or not. It must harden the frontiers.
Is there no more human solution to saving the world from a dictator, differ-
ent from sending armies to the battlefield, and to make whole countries respon-
sible ? Apart from the months of suffering, such activities create decades of
hatred. Why not try to make war against that one person - the dictator ?!
With
all our modern technology, there should be ways of attacking essentially just
that one person. Don't you think so ? I admit that there are very few examples
so far, but technology improves daily.
Wars create hatred. I dislike wars: life can be so much more pleasant
without.
Your friend Wolfgang.
