Invitation and Call for Papers
International Conference
Sobornost,
Conciliarity and Communion:
from
khomiakov to zizioulas
23-26 October 2008
Bose,
Italy
Theme
of the conference
The theme of conciliarity (synodality) occupies an
important place in contemporary Christian theology, being developed in
different ways in Catholic, Orthodox and Protestant traditions. Denoting
primarily a gathering of bishops exercising a particular responsibility, this
term in a more comprehensive sense may refer to all the members of the Church.
This latter understanding is usually associated with the Russian term
sobornost coined by the early slavophiles, especially by Alexei Khomiakov,
whose ideas made a profound impact on subsequent development of ecclesiology
both in the East and in the West.
Recently the theme of conciliarity has become a
subject of discussion by Joint International Commission for the Dialogue between
the Roman Catholic Church and the Orthodox Church in Ravenna. The Orthodox
delegation was headed by Metropolitan John Zizioulas and the final document of
the Commission is deeply influenced by "ecclesiology of communion"
developed in his works such as Being as Communion (1985) and Communion & Otherness (2006).
The aim of
the forthcoming Conference is to discuss interpretations of conciliarity and
sobornost in different Christian traditions, to find where these traditions
converge and how their differences can help them enrich each other.
In the course of the Conference, the
following questions will be addressed.
l
Khomiakov's idea of sobornost and its influence on 20th
century theology,
l
Ecclesiology of communion in Vatican II documents,
l
The place of conciliarity in contemporary Orthodox ecclesiology,
l
Conciliarity and development of ecumenical dialogue,
l
John Zizioulas' relational ontology and 20th century
theological-philosophical thought,
l
Conciliarity in the context of different cultures.
The given list does not exhaust all the
aspects of the conference theme but
provides a focus for expected discussions.
