Satellite Acquired by the Moon 35 Years ago 35 years have passed since "Luna-10", an Automatic
Interplanetary Station (AIS), was put into orbit around the
Moon and became its first artificial satellite. The
"Molnia-M" rocket carrier with the AIS on board was
launched at the BAIKONUR space-vehicle launching site on
March 31, 1966. An engine was put into operation to
decelerate the vehicle 3.5 days later and the apparatus was
brought into a selenocentrical orbit. The main assignment
of the flight was to verify functioning the board systems
on the station and the rocket carrier through all flight
stages. Scientific research assignments were not ignored
either: the station was supplied with the device for
radiation conditions around the Moon to be measured, gauges
to detect solar plasma and meteorite particles, gamma
spectrometer, etc. It was the "International" tune conveyed
to the Earth from the station that was considered to be the
apotheosis of the flight. "Luna-10" was under way for 56
days, 460 revolutions having been completed around our
celestial counterpart. The American "Lunar Orbiter-1" was
put into orbit around the Moon 4.5 months later.
